Seit Wochen, ja gar Monaten, sprüht der Spanier Topuria nur so vor Selbstbewusstsein. Er führte intensivst Trashtalk, nannte sich selbst bereits den Champion und predictete ein Knockout in der ersten oder zweiten Runde. Viele sahen Parallelen zu einer gewissen Conor McGregor Persona vor seinem damaligen Kampf gegen Jose Aldo. Er machte es jedenfalls dem Iren im Kampf nach. Nach einer ausgeglichenen ersten Runde mit leichten Vorteilen für Volkanowski began El Matador seine temporeichen Kombination zu erhöhen. Er hatte den Australier schließlich gegen den Zaun gedrängt und anschließend eine perfekte Rechte gelandet. Volk klappte bewusstlos zusammen und Topuria untermauerte sein Selbstbewusstsein vor dem Fight. Ganz nach dem Motto "Talked the Talk, and Walked the Walk". Wir gratulieren El Matador und allen spanischen und georgischen Anhängern.
Contender Kämpfe
Middleweight Berzerker Clash und Welterweight & Bantamweight Action
The two ox-built middleweights Paulo Costa and Robert Whittaker delivered the expected stand and bang action blast, with Whittaker ultimately narrowly prevailing.
Ian Machado Garry and Merab Dvalishvili also both won their fights. The victories move all three closer to the top of the division and put a title fight in the foreseeable future, especially for Dvalishvili, especially since his friend Aljimain Sterling is no longer the champion, but Sean O'Malley is.
What happens next?
Title defenses instead of double-champion attempts
Ilia Topuria has several options at his disposal. He himself said after the fight that he doesn't see any interesting fighters below 145. But that won't matter to the UFC. The winner of Fight Night Yair Rodriguez vs. Brian Ortega will likely get his next shot. A rematch with Volkanowski, who is considered invincible, at least at featherweight, doesn't seem out of the question, though in our opinion, it's not as logical as Rodriguez/Ortega.
Whittaker, Merab, and Garry are all in the same situation where they'll likely challenge for the title sooner or later. However, Garry will still need a few ranked opponents, while Merab and Whittaker could be quicker.
